16-year-old, shot with RCMP gun, finally returns home from hospital

WINNIPEG — 16-year-old Calli Vanderaa is back at home and recovering after being shot with a stolen RCMP firearm and spending nearly 3 weeks in hospital.

On Oct. 24 the Winnipeg teen was shot and critically wounded after a bullet pierced her chest. On Friday, she was released from hospital.

“The bullet entered her right lung punctured her lung, it hit her spleen and her colon,” Corey Vanderaa said, speaking to Global News outside the Health Sciences Centre just a few days after his daughter was shot.

Vanderaa was with friends in the parking lot outside the Mac’s convenience store on Autumnwood Drive and Winakwa Road at around 12:30 a.m. when a shot was fired at the vehicle she was sitting in.

The weapon used to shoot the young girl had previously been stolen from the cruiser of an off-duty RCMP officer outside his home, according to Winnipeg police.

Police arrested 25-year-old Matthew Andrew Miles after a six hour stand-off on Keenleyside Street, where they located the stolen weapon. He’s facing 11 charges including theft. 22-year-old Matthew Wilfred McKay was arrested a short time later and faces 30 charges including attempted murder.

Officers said they do not believe Vanderaa was targeted.

She has been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder as a result of the random shooting.

The teen still needs follow-up medical and emotional care even after her release from hospital.
