WATCH: Great Dane helps 11-year-old with genetic disorder to walk

When Bella met George, it was a match made in heaven.

Bella Burton, 11, was born with a rare genetic disorder called Morquio syndrome. It stunted the growth of her bones and limits her mobility.

According to Today, she has already had nine major surgeries on her hips and feet. The fifth-grader from Massachusetts depended on crutches or wheelchairs to get around for most of her life, until she met George last year.

The two-year-old Great Dane is a service dog that Bella leans on to walk. Bella met George through the Service Dog Project, which helps pair up individuals with limited mobility with Great Danes.

“Once we saw Bella being around those dogs, how she was always in such a great mood and she loved going there, we thought, ‘What are we waiting for?’” mom Rachel Burton said.

Burton said the pair have been inseparable from the start and have been documenting their journey together online.

With George’s help, Bella’s legs are now stronger and she’s able to walk without crutches, ride a bike and even run short distances. He comforts her during medical appointments and sleeps next to her at night.

At the end of this year, the Burton family will be attending an American Kennel Club event in Orlando, where George will receive an Award for Canine Excellence.
