FREDERICTON – The New Brunswick government is in the early stages of assembling a working group to organize the welcoming of Syrian refugees to the province.

Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour Minister Francine Landry said in a statement that welcoming refugees to N.B. is a “priority for our government.”

“The working group is in its early stages, and I hope to have more information to share in the coming days,” she said.

The group will work with immigrant settlement agencies, sponsorship agreement holders, multi-faith organizations and other stakeholder groups, according to Landry.

Since 2010, New Brunswick has helped 33 Syrian refugees settle in the province.

Premier Brian Gallant said in September that the province is willing to help the federal government in any way, and that the province’s doors are open to accept refugees.

The province donated $50,000 to a United Nations fund.

“While refugee identification and selection is a federal matter, we believe that there is much we can do as a province to prepare for the possible arrival of refugees in New Brunswick, including ensuring they feel welcomed into our communities,” said Landry.
