TORONTO – Former Toronto Blue Jays shortstop Jose Reyes was arrested on Halloween after allegedly assaulting his wife in a Hawaii hotel room, according to media reports.

Sources tell the Hawaii News Now that Reyes allegedly pulled his wife Katherine off the bed, grabbed her throat and shoved her into the sliding glass balcony door.

The alleged assault happened inside the couple’s Maui resort hotel room.

According to television station KHNL, Reyes’ wife suffered injuries to her thigh, neck and chest.

She was treated at a nearby hospital close to the Four Seasons Hualalai resort after hotel security summoned police.

The Colorado Rockies issued a brief statement on Monday calling the incident concerning.

“We were extremely disappointed and concerned to learn of the allegations involving Jose Reyes,” said the Rockies organization.

“We continue to gather information and will address this matter appropriately, in accordance with Major League Baseball’s Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Policy.”

Major League Baseball can suspend players with pay when legal charges are pending in “exceptional cases” under a new domestic violence policy signed in August.

The policy allows the baseball commissioner to issue discipline for “just cause,” the same standard used under the sport’s collective bargaining agreement. Discipline is not dependent on a criminal conviction.

Reyes, who was traded to the Colorado Rockies for all-star shortstop Troy Tulowitzki this past year, has since been released on bail in connection to the incident.
