SIU investigating injuries to elderly man after police shoot deer in Thornhill

TORONTO — Ontario’s police watchdog is investigating after an elderly man was injured following an incident where police shot a seriously injured deer in Thornhill.

The Special Investigations Unit said York Regional Police officers responded to a report of the injured animal in the Henderson Avenue and Proctor Avenue area.

The officers closed the area to traffic and used a firearm to put the animal down. Shortly after, a 78-year-old man was found injured nearby.

The unnamed man was transported to hospital, treated and released. The SIU provided no further information on the extent of the man’s injuries or whether or not he was shot in the incident.

Two investigators and one forensic investigator have been assigned to probe the incident.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
