WINNIPEG — Hundreds of volunteers will hit the streets Sunday and Monday in an effort to document Winnipeg’s homeless population.

The Social Planning Council of Winnipeg is organizing the city’s first ‘street census.’

Over a 24-hour period starting Sunday evening, approximately 300 volunteers will make contact with as many people experiencing homelessness as they can to try and get a better picture of the problem in Winnipeg.

“It’s a project designed to identify how many people are experiencing homelessness in Winnipeg and learn a bit about them. What are their demographics? How long are they homeless for? What are their service needs? What are some of their experiences?” says Christina Maes Nino with the Social Planning Council of Winnipeg.

Of the 300 volunteers, 48 have experienced homelessness themselves.

“This is a chance for people to see personally what some Winnipeggers are facing just to stay alive,” said Maes Nino in a news release.
