WINNIPEG — Feeling unsafe and crumbling infrastructure are among many complaints Winnipeg cyclists expressed at an open house Tuesday night. The open house invited residents to give their input on the city’s future plans. Those plans include protecting the bike lanes downtown and connecting the forks to the exchange district. It’s still in the early stages but the city wants to share what they’ve researched so far.

“We really want to go to the public at the beginning of the project to show them what we’re doing, why we’re doing it and how the public can get involved,” Scott Suderman with Public Works said.

The plans also showed how the construction would affect the surrounding area and the logistics behind building new lanes.

“It’s not only about upgrading the existing bike lanes, it’s about looking at the entire street,” Suderman said.

The city also noted that the number of people moving downtown is increasing, and they hope protecting lanes in the core will encourage more active transportation.
