Voting by special ballot still an option on Tuesday

HALIFAX – Advance polls for this month’s federal election close at 8 p.m. on Monday, but there are still ways to vote before election day.

Elections Canada is accepting votes by special ballot in person until 6 p.m. on Tuesday.

Voters can vote for any of their home riding candidates at any of the agency’s offices in Canada.

The process can require a little more paperwork, including writing the name of the candidate on the nameless ballot, but operates generally the same way as regular voting.

A Global News video journalist was able to complete the entire process in about 20 minutes on Monday at the Lovett Lake Court office; there was one other person ahead in line.

“If you come, and there are many people ahead of you, you can expect some delay,” said Françoise Enguehard, the regional media advisor for the Atlantic provinces for Elections Canada.

The deadline to request to vote by special ballot through mail is 6 p.m. on Tuesday. Enguehard cautioned that choosing this option would be challenging time-wise because a special ballot kit would have to be sent to the voter with the return date being election day.
