Better Winnipeg: Women’s right to vote nearing 100th anniversary in Manitoba

WINNIPEG — Celebrations are being planned for a milestone anniversary in Manitoba. We’re on the heels of the 100th anniversary of women’s right to vote in this province.

Not only was it a huge step for Manitobans, it was the very first step of its kind in Canada.

Nellie McClung had a major role in convincing politicians that women should have a right to vote and in 1916 the historic change happened.

McClung’s efforts are not only being celebrated with special events honouring the centennial, it is also shared on the website ournellie.com and through the creation of a monument on the grounds of the Manitoba Legislature.

Global’s Eva Kovacs speaks with one of the founders of the Nellie McClung Foundation, Myrna Driedger.
