LETHBRIDGE – The downtown core was alive this weekend as residents took part in Arts Days.

Art Walk was one event that ran for three days during the week-long festival. From Friday to Sunday, Art Walk took place at local businesses to showcase some of the very talented artists in the city.

One of those artists is Shauna Hayward, a glass bead maker. She set up her torch in Catwalk Salon and Spa to show off her skills and jewelry to patrons of the salon.

“I watched someone do it while we were on family vacation,” said Hayward. “I said to my husband, ‘I have to do this! I have to melt glass!’”

It’s an intricate skill she has mastered over the past 10 years, and she was thrilled to participate and show others what she does best.

“It’s just fun to meet people and I like to show people because I got interested in it by seeing someone doing it,” said Hayward. “It’s nice to show people how it’s done and then they appreciate the work that goes into each bead.”

In addition to Art Walk, there was free admission to the new exhibits at the Southern Alberta Art Gallery, and an artisan market in CASA giving even more local artists the chance to show and sell their pieces.

Organizers said the event is a great way to display the diverse art community in Lethbridge, in great venues and businesses in the downtown core.

“We’ve got artists who are doing it full time, we’ve got artists doing it part time as hobbies,” said Allie Arts Council Lethbridge  communications coordinator Ashley Markus. “Arts Days is just a great chance for everybody to come out of the woodwork, whether they’re an artist or an art supporter, and just to see what’s going on.”

Allied Arts Council will be hosting another artisan market called “Christmas at CASA” on Nov. 20 and 21, partnering with the Bright Lights Festival.
