Mulcair discusses Montreal’s priorities with Mayor Denis Coderre

MONTREAL – NDP leader Thomas Mulcair met with Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre Wednesday morning to discuss the city’s priorities when it comes to the federal government.

Speaking alongside the mayor, Mulcair pledged that his party would be a “reliable, long-term partner” for Canada’s major cities and said the Harper Conservatives have abandoned their commitment to municipalities in recent weeks.

The NDP is proposing $8.7 billion over 20 years with a focus on infrastructure and public transit.

“We’ll restore mail-to-mail door delivery,” said Mulcair.

“We will make sure that the Champlain Bridge, which is a federal infrastructure…is not going to all of a sudden change the budgets of the hundreds of thousands of families that rely on it by putting a toll where there was none before.”

“I think that for the sake of Montrealers, the Prime Minister of Canada represents all Canadians and I think he should be there,” said Coderre earlier in the month.

“I spoke to Stephen several times, if he’s not coming that’s his problem.”

It is unsure if Harper will meet with Coderre before the elections on Oct. 19.
