OTTAWA – The federal election campaign trail looks to be much quieter today as most of the leaders avoid the spotlight to instead prepare for Thursday’s French-language debate in Montreal.

Conservative Leader Stephen Harper is already in Montreal but has no public events as he concentrates on debate preparation.

Party officials indicate he will focus on many of the same themes he has raised in the English debates held so far – stressing his ability to manage the economy while trying to paint his opponents as reckless spenders who will drive up taxes.

Only the New Democrats’ Tom Mulcair will keep an active campaign schedule today by meeting Montreal’s Mayor Denis Coderre in the morning before making a joint announcement.

Mulcair will also give a speech in the city in the early afternoon.

The only event on Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau’s agenda is a photo opportunity at a martial arts academy in Montreal.

Green party Leader Elizabeth May and Bloc Quebecois Leader Gilles Duceppe have no public events planned.
