HALIFAX – The Nova Scotia government says Ottawa has granted an increase of 350 immigrants under the province’s new express entry streams for highly-skilled immigrants.

Premier Stephen McNeil says the move will allow Nova Scotia to nominate 1,350 immigrants under the provincial nominee program in 2015.

McNeil says that’s nearly double the cap of 700 nominees in 2014.

The federal government initially approved 1,050 immigration nominations this year, and the province had been lobbying for an increase.

The Immigration Department says more immigrants came last year than at any time in the last decade with 2,670 people settling in the province.

It says Statistics Canada has reported a retention rate of 71 per cent for immigrants who arrived between 2007 and 2011.
