Rain dampens 2015 Saskatchewan harvest

Heavy rain over the weekend dampened the 2015 Saskatchewan harvest but producers still made progress getting the crop into the bin. According to the weekly crop report, 40 per cent of the crop is now in the bin with another 33 per cent swathed or ready to straight-cut.

The five-year average for this time of year is 25 per cent combined.

Warm and dry weather is needed to help fields dry out after the heavy rain on the weekend delayed the harvest in many parts of the province.

Producers in the southwest are furthest along, with 61 per cent of the crop combined.

Quality is a concern in many areas and yields vary across the province, but are estimated to be close to average.

Strong winds and heavy rain lodged some crops in the past week. Lodging is the bending or leaning of the stem or the entire plant.
