WATCH: North Shore Rescue is asking anyone heading out into the backcountry to be prepared. In the last two days, crews have responded to eight emergency calls. Jennifer Palma has more on why it’s been so busy.
The Labour Day weekend is proving to be a busy time for North Shore Rescue crews.
Crew members were dispatched to four rescues in a span of 24 hours, including coming to the aid of an injured hiker in Lions Bay and a German tourist who went off the trail on Grouse Mountain.
“It’s just the nature of the beast,” said Peter Haigh of North Shore Rescue. “August was, I think, our busiest month we’ve ever had in our team history: 29 calls. It’s definitely carrying on, it seems.”
On Saturday night, crews got a call about a missing 68-year-old tourist who wandered off a trail. They searched the area with a helicopter, eventually spotting his flashlight. Crew members located him near the Grouse Grind, using ropes and harnesses to get him to safety around 4:30 a.m.
It was the fourth call the team responded to in 24 hours and the seventh in two days.
Hours before, they were in Lions Bay helping a hiker who needed to be long-lined off a trail after injuring her leg. She is expected to make a full recovery.
With summer coming to an end, North Shore Rescue reminds hikers to take precautions as days become shorter. They ask hikers to have the proper supplies and always leave a detailed plan of their route with someone before heading out on their trek.
