Crash closes Deerfoot Trail, sends one to hospital

A portion of Deerfoot Trail was closed for several hours overnight as police investigated a serious crash.

Just before 2:30 a.m. Saturday, a vehicle traveling south hit the guardrail and went off the road at the Calf Robe Bridge.

It plunged 30 metres down a steep embankment towards the Bow River, but stopped just short of the water.

The jaws of life were used to rescue the trapped driver, the lone occupant of the vehicle.

He was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries, but his condition has since improved.

Police say the driver told them he fell asleep at the wheel. Alcohol is not believed to be a factor.
