Celine Dion set to return to Las Vegas stage with 1st show since last August

LAS VEGAS – Celine Dion says her songs have taken on a different meaning for her in light of her husband Rene Angelil’s battle with throat cancer.

“The meaning of the songs are having a meaning now,” the Canadian singing sensation told a news conference in Las Vegas Thursday evening, shortly before she was to perform at Caesars Palace. “To me, they’ll become different songs, to you maybe not.”

Thursday night’s performance was to mark her first show since August 2014 when she began a lengthy hiatus due to Angelil’s health problems.

Dion didn’t give details of her husband’s medical condition, but she did send a message to Angelil, who was planning to watch the show from the couple’s home: “Promise me something: Just enjoy. Let it go. I love you.”

She also said she is trying teach her children that their father’s health problems are part of life.

“Things happen in life, and you cannot be crying and depressed and constantly talk about ‘oh my God’,” Dion told reporters during the news conference in which she took questions in both English and French.

Dion told USA Today earlier this week that Angelil has told her he wants to die in her arms and has given her detailed instructions for his funeral.

The five-time Grammy winner’s show, “Celine,” has proven a huge draw on the Las Vegas Strip.

She actually opened the Colosseum with her first performance back on March 25, 2003, and has now performed 927 shows there.

She also has shows scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, and will perform multiple dates per month before wrapping Jan. 17.

Dion also said she will continue to record, releasing a new French-language album in 2016 with an English-language follow-up in 2017
