As Céline Dion prepares to return to the Las Vegas stage, she has her ailing husband René Angélil on her mind.

“I didn’t want to be here at first, I don’t need it. Don’t get me wrong, I love singing for people, but I have priorities,” the Canadian chanteuse told USA Today in what the publication classified as an “often-intense” interview.

Dion says René insisted she return to performing, something she’s been away from since her husband’s throat cancer returned.

“But René really gave me a gift. All my grieving, it was during this last year. I think I’ve got this. For now,” she said. “When it hits me, it’s going to hit me. But my biggest job is to tell my husband, we’re fine. I’ll take care of our kids. You’ll watch us from another spot.”

The mega-selling performer did not shy away from addressing the difficult position they’ve been in as René’s health battle continues.

“We have asked (doctors) many times, how long does he have, three weeks, three months? René wants to know,” she explained. “But they say they don’t know.”

Dion also revealed her husband’s wish for when he passes away.

“I’ll say, ‘You’re scared? I understand. Talk to me about it,’” said Dion. “And René says to me, ‘I want to die in your arms.’ OK, fine, I’ll be there, you’ll die in my arms.”

It hasn’t been determined as of yet if René will be able to attend Dion’s first show back. If he can’t make it in person on Thursday, there will be a live feed provided where he’ll be able to watch at home.
