Stickpin fire in Washington State causes evacuation alert in B.C.

UPDATE: An Evacuation Alert has been issued for areas south of Grand Forks and Christina Lake due to the Stickpin Fire less than five kilometres from the Canada-U.S. border.

“This is an Evacuation Alert, not an Evacuation Order, no residents are directed to evacuate at this time,” said the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary in a statement.

The alert includes Electoral Area D south of Kettle River and Grand Forks, including the Industrial/Ruckle area of Grand Forks, and the Ponderosa and Cascade areas of Electoral Area C.

There is an information meeting at Grand Forks High School at 6 p.m. tonight, and one at Christina Lake Community Hall at 8 p.m.

The Stickpin fire burning in Washington State is currently more than 47,500 acres in size and is about 5 kilometres from the B.C. border.

The fire is still causing a lot of smoke for residents in southern B.C., particularly in the area of Christina Lake and Grand Forks.

Thompson, Similkameen, Fraser Canyon, Nicola, Shuswap and the entire Boundary and Kootenay areas due to the large wildfires burning in Washington State.

The fire is currently 17 per cent contained and fire lines constructed along the western edge are holding. Crews are working to construct a line to keep the fire from progressing toward Christina Lake and Grand Forks.

On the southwestern perimeter, bulldozer lines are being constructed but there is unburned fuel between the line and the fire edge. Crews in Washington State say public and firefighter safety is still a significant concern.

Firefighters from B.C. are helping fight this fire.

Information meetings about the Stickpin fire are going to be held Wednesday night in Grand Forks at the high school at 6 p.m. A meeting will then be held in Christina Lake at the community hall at 8 p.m.
