WINNIPEG – A man has found himself in hot water with authorities after violating his anglers license.
The man was found to be in possession of 29 sauger when the limit for licensed anglers is four.
The incident happened in Lockport as two Selkirk District Officers were conducting compliance inspections at the St. Andrews Dam.
The officers observed a man heading towards his vehicle carrying fishing gear and a cooler. When they inspected the cooler they found 18 sauger inside.
Officers commonly see people store their catch in coolers in their cars before heading back to the water to continue, according to the Manitoba Natural Resource Officers Association.
Based on that, officers decided to conduct an investigation of the man’s vehicle. Ten more sauger were found in the spare tire of the car.
“Prior to terminating the inspection, the Officer noticed that a rivet was missing from a plastic moulding adjacent to the spare tire and that tool marks were noticeable indicating it had been opened on several occasions,” read a posting on the MNROA Facebook page Saturday. “Lifting this plastic moulding with his hands, the Officer observed a plastic shopping bag tucked inside. This bag contained another single sauger.”
All fish were seized and the man was fined $727.
