MONTREAL – A mandatory dress code, cameras in all cabs, new taxi meters and electronic payment – these are just a few of the changes planned for Montreal’s taxi industry.

On Thursday, Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre and representatives from the industry announced their plan for the next two years.

In partnership with Revenu Québec, the mayor explained the reason taximeters will be installed in every cab is to to ensure consistent pricing.

All Montreal taxis will have cameras by the end of 2016 to ensure security for both drivers and passengers.

The mayor said his main priority is integrated technology, increased security and better customer service.
“We want everyone to feel first class,” he said.

The details of the mandatory dress code for Montreal cabbies have yet to be ironed out.

The mayor also announced that all taxis must have a unified image or mark in time for Montreal’s 375th anniversary.
