WINNIPEG — A Manitoba politician who spent more than a decade in the NDP cabinet has resigned his legislature seat eight months before the next election.
Peter Bjornson had announced in April that he would not run for re-election, citing personal reasons and trouble with his back.
His decision to leave means the Gimli constituency will not be represented in the legislature until the election.
He was not immediately available for comment.
Bjornson, a former teacher, was first elected in 2003 and held cabinet portfolios including education, housing and entrepreneurship.
Bjornson supported Premier Greg Selinger in the leadership battle that Selinger survived earlier this year.
