Deaf brothers hear each other for the first time, share beautiful message

WATCH ABOVE: In Tampa, a family gathered in a hospital room for a moment they’ve been waiting on for nearly 50 years. It wasn’t a sad day. It was a joyful one. Bobby Lewis reports.

Davelis and Elias Goutoufas are a pair of deaf, middle-aged brothers who had never heard each other’s voice until Wednesday when technology provided a tiny miracle.

Davelis, a cigar chop owner who goes by ‘D.C.’, first heard sounds thanks to a cochlear implant in June. But his brother Elias, an Online ASL Teacher in Tampa, had to wait to use the same technology.

WTSP reporter Bobby Lewis and a camera were at Tampa General Hospital to capture the emotional moment both brothers heard each other for the first time.

As the audiologist turned on his device, sound filled Elias’ ears and his grin went wide as emotions ran high in the room.

Their first priority? The pair blew on their late father’s whistle and then listened to his voice for the first time from a recording of a lullaby he sang to them as children.

D.C. also had an important message for his brother – something he’s probably wanted to say out loud for a lifetime.
