Summary: The Liberal Party’s only seat in Manitoba, MP Kevin Lamoureux hopes to build on his 44-vote margin of victory from 2011.

Boundaries: A riding on the northwest end of the city, it roughly includes everything north of the CP rail line, west of the Red River, and south of Inkster Boulevard, along with The Maples.

Last Election: Longtime Liberal MLA Lamoureux hung on to the federal seat he won in a 2010 by-election with a 44 vote victory over NDP candidate Rebecca Blaikie, daughter of longtime MP Bill Blaikie.

Under the new boundaries, which adds the most northern area of The Maples, the NDP would have taken Winnipeg North by 109 votes last election (based on polling results).

History: Prior to Lamoureux’s by-election victory, the riding had elected NDP candidates in every election since 1962, with the exception of 1988 to 2004, when it was held by Liberal MP Rey Pagtakhan.

Demographics: An extremely diverse riding, Winnipeg North has the highest percentage of immigrants in Manitoba at 36.4 per cent. 21.6 per cent of residents are also Aboriginal, the second highest percentage in an urban area in Canada. And 28.2 per cent identify as Filipino, by far the largest number in Canada.
