Residents angry after green space accidentally torn up

EDMONTON – A miscommunication is being blamed on a green space being torn up in south Edmonton.

Aspen Gardens residents were confused and angry earlier this week as they watched heavy equipment begin to tear up a green space in their neighbourhood. The frustrated residents contacted the City of Edmonton in search of answers.

“We all banded together to say like we gotta get this worked stopped until we understand what’s happening here,” said Kevin Medin, resident.

“Our councillor is very involved in our community,” said Susan Field, resident. “I told him what was happening, and he said ‘Susan, I was at both those public meetings and they said nothing about anything happening in our green space,’ so that got them on the bandwagon.”

Work was stopped at the green space Wednesday.

The city blames the mistake on a miscommunication, which happened when a contractor, who was doing flood mitigation work in the neighbourhood, inquired about a lay down area for equipment.

The city has taken responsibility for the error and is now scrambling to fix the space.

Residents call the green space a vital component to the community.

“I have my dog down here every single day, two or three times a day. We clean it up, we keep it clean. It’s always in use,” said Medin.

“Hundreds of people use this spot, not even from our community. They walk up from the ravine. They walk in from Greenfield, Royal Gardens, runners from the exercise places,” said Field.

There is no timeline or cost to repair the damage.
