WATCH ABOVE: The family of Lorne Miller says they’re still seeking closure after 31-year-old Edward Mikla plead guilty to failing to remain at the scene of an accident causing death. Kimberly Tams reports.
Lethbridge – A Lethbridge man has plead guilty in a hit and run that left a 45-year old cyclist dead. 31-year old Edward Mikla plead guilty to failing to stop at the scene of a collision, while a second charge of dangerous driving causing death was dropped by the Crown due to a lack of evidence. Mikla was charged in January of 2014 after Lorne Miller was hit by a vehicle while riding his bike home from work on Stafford Drive North.
Defense lawyer Greg White says Mikla has been remorseful since the night the incident happened.
“It’s taken this long to get here. Now that we are here, he has taken responsibility of what he did in the situation . There is not a day that has gone by where he does not remember what has happened in a sense that he was involved in a death of a person,” said White. “It was an accident, but he did something criminal by leaving the scene.”
Miller’s family packed the courtroom – visibly upset by the court’s decision. His sister, Candace Van Diemen, left the courthouse in tears, shaking her head.
“We are happy he plead guilty to one of the charges. We are highly dissapointed the other charge was dismissed,” she said.
The case has been adjourned to August 10th to set a date for sentencing
