WINNIPEG – When Winnipeg hosts the 2017 Canada Summer Games, the athletes won’t be the only ones winning.

Roughly 20 facilities will be renovated ahead of the games. The track at the University of Manitoba will be resurfaced and the Pan Am Pool will receive a new new bulkhead to help bring it back up to international standards.

This will be the first time Winnipeg hosts the multi-sport event.

More than 4,000 athletes will compete in 16 sports between July 28 and August 13, 2017. All three levels of government are investing millions of dollars to help build and update facilities for the games. Construction has already begun on the Canada Games Sport for Life Centre in the city’s downtown.

“These games will leave a legacy well beyond when the torch is passed to the next city,” said Winnipeg mayor Brian Bowman. “Our athletes will have tremendous facilities to help them train for years to come.”

Winnipeg will be the largest host community in the history of the Canada Games. The sailing competition will be held in Gimli while Kenora, Ontario will host rowing. The 2017 Canada Games will mark the 50th anniversary of the national event.

Organizers unveiled the games branding Tuesday two years to the day they begin. The multi-coloured pattern was made to resemble thermal images and weather patterns often seen during warm Manitoba summers. They’re also a nod to the contoured forms used in Aboriginal art.
