Reginans have burgers on the brain

REGINA – Burger fans have more and more choices as U.S. chains have been moving north.

Carl’s Jr. recently opened up its’ first Regina location and business has been brisk for the burger chain.

“I think the response has been phenomenal. We’ve had amazing turnouts day in and day out. We’re very blessed and grateful for it,” said Robyn Kouros, owner and operator of the Regina Carl’s Jr. “We’re slightly overwhelmed at the same time, but still prepared to take on the challenge.”

The popularity of the burgers might be connected to memories of a simpler time.

“There’s nothing like a burger to feel comforted and to remind you of home,” said Kouros.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

This feeling may be why people are forgoing fancier meals for more basic fare.

Nicolle will be bringing the Fuddruckers franchise back to the Queen city, 18 years after the one in Regina closed.

Nicolle is no stranger to the local food industry. He used to own three Dairy Queen outlets with his late father.

“I think people would rather have a gourmet hamburger than a steak or white table cloth dinner,” he said.

The only other Fuddruckers in the country is in Saskatoon, and its’ success made Regina seem like a logical choice.

“Saskatoon is the flagship store and is the top volume store in their entire system. Opening it in Regina makes perfect sense,” said Nicolle.

Nicolle will open five of the restaurants in total, with locations throughout Saskatchewan and Alberta.

Burger aficionados around the city are happy to have a variety of different suppliers.

“My fiancee and I love burgers and the more choices the better,” said one burger enthusiast.

For some, the additional choices mean the Regina is catching up to the bigger city centers.

“When you go down to the states you have your choice of whatever you want, and even in bigger cities in Canada. So to see Regina expanding in fast food, it’s nice.”
