Agricultural disaster declared in Sturgeon County

WATCH ABOVE: Sturgeon County is the latest community to declare a state of agricultural disaster.

EDMONTON – Sturgeon County Council voted unanimously to declare a state of agricultural disaster because of a recent drought and the impact its had on local farmers.

The declaration was made to help local farms, Sturgeon County Mayor Tom Flynn said.

“These severe drought conditions are challenging our local farmers, and by issuing this declaration we hope to increase awareness of these tough conditions producers are facing.”

According to Sturgeon County’s Agricultural Services, the area is experiencing a 50 year low in soil moisture levels.

The last time Sturgeon County declared a state of agricultural disaster was June 2009.

Sturgeon County is the second Edmonton-region county to declare a state of agricultural disaster. Parkland County made the same announcement last week.

Leduc County will meet Tuesday morning to discuss the possibility of issuing the same declaration as they seek provincial and federal aid.
