EDMONTON – Edmonton police are trying to figure out what caused a man to drive his truck at a high speed into a west Edmonton building early Friday morning.

Police initially responded to an alarm call around 2:45 a.m., but arrived to find a heavily-damaged black truck sticking out of the industrial building at 17804 118 Ave.

Fire crews were called to pull the Ford F150 truck from the building, which is when the male driver was found unresponsive and declared dead. No one else was in the vehicle.

Police have not yet determined why the 48-year-old driver crashed into the building. The Edmonton Police Service’s major collision unit was called in.

Initial investigations show the truck was driving north on 178 Street, when it approached the T intersection at 118 Avenue.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“It appears that the truck jumped over that first meridian, struck a sign and then continued on across 118th Avenue,” said Const. Scott Deputat, major collision investigation team. “Going with a high speed, failed to negotiate the turn, and struck the building.”

“We don’t know the cause as to why the vehicle was going so fast when it hit the building. We’re waiting for some toxicology reports from the M.E. [Medical Examiner].”

The building is home to the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades Local 177, which said on its website the office would be closed until further notice because of the collision.

The westbound lanes of 118 Avenue were shut down between 170 and 178 Street. The intersection of 118 and 178 was also closed.
