2015 Calgary Mayor’s Urban Design Awards open for submissions

CALGARY – If you’re a designer looking to make Calgary more beautiful, comfortable and vibrant, the Mayor’s Urban Design Awards are for you.

The awards started in 2009 and run every two years. They celebrate designers, artists and architects across 12 categories, including:

  • Civic design projects
  • Approved or adopted urban design plans
  • Conceptual or theoretical urban design projects
  • Urban fragments
  • Student projects
  • City edge development
  • Great city, great design
  • Mawson Urban Design Award
  • Urban architecture
  • Community improvement projects

Two new categories for 2015 are the People’s Choice Award and the Green City Award.

“Great design is integral to building a great city,” said Mayor Naheed Nenshi in a statement. “People should be inspired and excited by the spaces and the places that they see and interact with every day.”

“We’re increasingly getting a national reputation for great design, and that’s something I want to see continue.”

The entry fee is $100 for each project, in a cheque made out to The City of Calgary. You can learn more about requirements and fill out a submission form at calgary.ca/MUDA.

Nominations will be announced by September 18; the free gala event will be in November and is open to the public.
