Massive new housing project for Pierrefonds introduced

WATCH: Traffic issues are on everyone’s mind as one of the largest housing projects in Montreal is being pitched in Pierrefonds. Global’s Tim Sargeant reports.

PIERREFONDS — Close to 6,000 new homes are being proposed for the western section of Pierrefonds.

The massive new residential real estate project was formally introduced by mayor Denis Coderre and local city councillors.

“We’re creating a kind of new model where we cherish the environment but at the same time that we are enhancing the quality of life of people and it’s part of the bigger plan,” Coderre said.

The housing project is planned on 185 hectares of land or the equivalent of 345 football fields and would be larger than the populations of Senneville and Baie-D’Urfé combined.

“The area that we’re talking about today is an area that has no infrastructure. There’s no road. No water works. There’s nothing,” Justine McIntyre, Montreal city councillor (Bois-de-Liesse) said.

There are plans to open an urban boulevard to facilitate traffic flow in the area but no commitment has been made from the transport minister.

“No development can take place in the western section of our borough unless real commitment happens with the minister in terms of realizing that project of the urban boulevard,” Pierrefonds-Roxboro Borough Mayor Jim Beis said.

Half of the land — 180 hectares — is currently zoned as green space and city officials promise to keep it that way.
