‘I’m open to all types of offers, except for the 1st pick’: Oilers Chiarelli on 2015 NHL Draft

SUNRISE, FL — Ever since NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly opened the golden envelope April 18, the Oilers have known they will be selecting Connor McDavid first overall at the NHL Entry Draft on June 26.

Earlier this week, Oilers General Manager Peter Chiarelli said he is very much open to trade talk, not just draft discussions.

“I’m open to all types of offers, except for the 1st pick overall. No, I’m serious.”

He wasn’t kidding.

But what if a team made Chiarelli an outlandish offer? What would it take for Chiarelli to hold the phone to his ear longer than a few seconds? What if a team offered both a top-five defenceman and a goaltender? Pekka Rinne and Shea Weber, for example. Jonathan Quick and Drew Doughty?

It’s no secret those two positions are where the Oilers are thin. But there’s no way Nashville or Los Angeles would even think about it, would they?

On Friday, Chiarelli will step up to the podium and select McDavid first overall. But wouldn’t it be something to hear what teams, if any, made an “off the charts offer” to make him think twice about it?
