A-30 toll consortium to find permanent solution to glitch, refund drivers

WATCH: Motorists carrying bikes on top of their cars beware – a glitch in the A-30 toll system is counting their vehicles as trucks. Global’s Billy Shields reports.

VAUDREUIL – Quebec’s transport minister Robert Poëti has ordered the consortium in charge of the Highway 30’s Serge-Marcil toll bridge to stop overcharging cars with rooftop bike racks as if they were trucks.

Officials told Global News Monday they first noticed the problem in the spring of 2013.

“We have limited information in this regard,” said Vanessa Miceli, an A-30 spokesperson.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

According to the toll schedule on the highway’s website, the toll machine should charge a car $2.40 to use the bridge.

A two-axle truck would pay $3.70 per trip, but the laser that measures the height of each vehicle is miscalculating the bike racks for a larger car.

Officials told Global News employees were given instructions Monday night to redirect cars with rooftop bike racks to manual booths rather than lanes that accept transponders.

Officials insist they are are working on a permanent solution, as well as a plan to reimburse drivers who had paid the elevated fee.
