PETITCODIAC, N.B. – A Petitcodiac Regional School student awarded one of the largest scholarships in North America says she owes her success to good family, friends and hard work.

Seventeen-year-old Kasey Killam will be attending the University of St. Andrews in Scotland this fall with the McEuen Scholarship Award.

The scholarship is one of the largest in North America valued at around $200,000.

It’s awarded to only one Canadian each year.

Killam, who is an honours student, says her mother was an inspiration to work hard.

“She’s just been really supportive through everything,” she said.

“She was the first in her family to go to university so she really pushed me to do that as well and it was very inspiring.”

Killam’s mother, Nicole Killam, was also her teacher.

“I am very excited for her,” she said.

“The fact that I’m a teacher and that I’m in the school has certainly put a focus on education in her life,” she said. “It’s very important in our family because it is a big part of my life.”

The university also has some royal clout.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge met there as students.

Killam’s principal Ewen Cameron said her story is an inspiration for others.

“It doesn’t matter where you come from,” he said. “If you set some goals you can achieve whatever your dreams are.”
