WINNIPEG — Fire crews battled a massive rooming house blaze on William Avenue between Juno Street and Isabel Street in downtown Winnipeg Monday evening.
Crews rushed to 511 William Avenue shortly after 6:30 p.m.
The blaze sent flames shooting into the air and a pall of smoke over the city’s core area.
Agnes Bear lives inside the home, and saw smoke and flames. She told Global News her 38-year-old daughter Mary Bear was trapped on the third floor.
She managed to escape the building, but was taken to hospital in unstable condition.
By shortly after 7, crews had the blaze under control but appeared to have plenty of work ahead of them extinguishing all the flames in the three storey house just three blocks east of Winnipeg’s Health Sciences Centre.
Fire crews tell Global News they estimate the damages are over $200,000. They believe the home is a total loss.
