Lacrosse team honours crash victim Jaydon Sommerfeld

CHESTERMERE – Jaydon Sommerfeld’s former lacrosse team, the Rockyview Silvertips, honoured their teammate the best way they know how – with a memorial game.

The 17 year old died on Wednesday, a day after he was involved in a serious crash – just meters from Chestermere high school.

It happened in the eastbound lanes of Highway 1 at Highway 791 at about 3:40 p.m.. A car heading northbound on Highway 791 stopped at a stop sign, then proceeded into the intersection.

Another car, with Sommerfeld and a female teenager, was heading eastbound and hit the car in the intersection. Their car then slammed into another truck also heading eastbound on Highway 1.

Sommerfeld was extricated from the car, then airlifted to hospital by STARS air ambulance. The female teen was taken to Foothills hospital in serious but stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries.

Sunday’s game was held at the Plainsmen Arena in Airdrie.

“As a team, we have decided to play the game in memory of Jaydon. We are creating a bursary in his memory with the proceeds from the door sales and 50/50’s,” said Silvertips General Manager, Kerry Vokeroth.

“Jaydon was an outstanding young man – very loved and respected and we want to honour him and his family.”

Details of the bursary will be released in the near future.

The team is also hosting a pub night next Friday to help the family with funeral costs.
