CALGARY – The owner of an Arbour Lake  house severely damaged by fire Thursday says a basement tenant is safe and sound.

The man’s whereabouts were a mystery and cause for concern.

“A tenant who lives in the basement is unaccounted for and it is unknown if he was home at the time of the fire,” said Calgary Fire Department spokesperson Carol Henke in a release.

According to the owner, the man’s son took him to a friend’s house for the night.

On Friday Henke confirmed the tenant wasn’t home when the fire broke out.

The two-alarm fire severely damaged a home on Arbour Stone Rise N.W. at around 12:15 p.m., as well as at least one neighbouring home. The fire department received multiple calls, including from people who could see the flames from Stoney Trail.

Henke first said the tenant of the house was not home at the time of the fire, but later said it was not clear.

“Upon searching the basement and main floor, nobody was found,” she wrote in an email to Global News. “Second floor unsafe to go into at this point. Tenant is still unaccounted for.”

Neighbouring homes were evacuated as a precaution, and sustained minor fire damage to the siding. No injuries were reported.

Fire crews remained on scene as of 3:30 p.m. to monitor for hot spots.
