Roughriders strong at backup quarterback

Watch above: How is the backup quarterback situation shaping up for the Saskatchewan Roughriders heading into the 2015 season? Kim Thue looks at the depth chart.

SASKATOON – So far, so good for the Darian Durant and his elbow early on at the Saskatchewan Roughriders training camp. Since its all good for the number one guy, what about the quarterbacks behind Durant on the depth chart?

Twelve years after being traded away from the Riders, Kevin Glenn has returned. According to Glenn, being back in green and white just feels right.

“I wouldn’t have signed here if it wasn’t,” said Glenn, who’s personality shines while speaking.

“I really felt this was the best place for me at this particular point of my career and I think I made a good decision.”

Glenn is now with his third team in the last three years. Overall, he’s played on five teams during a 15 year career that has featured Most Outstanding Player nominees, all star selections and community service awards.

The soon to be 36-year-old is also primed to move into seventh on the league’s all-time passing yards list, just over 500 yards behind hall of famer Matt Dunigan.

All that’s left to achieve in Glenn’s storied career is a Grey Cup Championship; the ultimate team goal.

“When you start thinking about yourself I think that’s when you don’t have success,” claims Glenn, the elder statesmen on the Riders roster. “The team goal is the important thing and if the team goals come, the individual goals will follow.”

Glenn has arrived in Saskatchewan to backup starter Durant and is competing with third year pro Tino Sunseri for the number two job.

Sunseri was a free agent after last season ended, but like Glenn, believes Saskatchewan is where he belongs.

“I heard some things from down south but I knew if I wanted to come back up here I wanted to be with this team. With these teammates. With this coaching staff,” said Sunseri.

The former University of Pittsburgh Panther went through an up and down 2014 season after being thrust into action because of Durant’s injuries.

According to Sunseri, the experience gained last season, good or bad, was invaluable.

“There is so many positives I can take away. Even whenever other people view it as a negative, I view it as a positive because it’s a learning experience for myself,” claims the 26-year-old.

“Me being a young guy in this league and understanding what’s going on and being able to learn from situations and trying to overcome adversity just makes you a stronger player.”

After Drew Willy left for Winnipeg following the 2013 season, the Riders backup quarterback depth could have been considered questionable. General manager Brendan Taman looks to have now restocked the position behind Durant.
