The Magrath Golf Club was established in 1925, but soon, it may not belong to the Town anymore. Council is pondering the idea of selling the course to a potential buyer.

“It’s a business and the Town already subsidizes a hockey rink and pool – our pockets are only so deep,” said Mayor Russ Barnett.

The club is currently operated by a golf board, but on land owned by the town of Magrath.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“Because they don’t have any assets, they cannot borrow money, and so that course would revert back to the Town to run,” explained Barnett. “The Town of Magrath does not have the expertise to run a golf course.”

Staff say the course is enjoying the best conditions it’s ever seen, and they fear if sold, ownership could fall into the wrong hands.

“We go year by year. If we have a couple of bad years, we don’t know if the potential new owner is going to think it’s viable to continue on,” said Head Pro Josh Walker.

According to the Barnett, there are only 46 members from Magrath and the rest are from surrounding area.

“If it reverts back to the Town, it’s going to fall on those 46 members of the Town. It will affect their tax dollars, not the other members that don’t live in the Town.”

A public meeting is scheduled for Tuesday night, and although the Mayor says the golf club sale is not on the agenda, he does expect the issue to be raised.
