Wildfire northwest of Quesnel caused by lightning strike

VANCOUVER – A wildfire burning 10 kilometres east of Pelican Lake and 80 kilometres northwest of Quesnel was caused by a lightning strike.

The Wildfire Management Branch says crews are responding to the blaze, estimated to be 250 hectares in size. No structures are threatened at this time.

There are currently 20 firefighters and two helicopters on site. More than 45 additional staff, including sustained action crews, a specialized Incident Management Team, and other support staff are on their way. Two more helicopters and heavy equipment are being mobilized to support fire suppression efforts.

The fire is burning in the same location as the historical wildfire near Pelican Lake in 2010.

The Wildfire Management Branch says nearby residents can expect to see increased smoke in the area over the next few days as crews conduct burn-offs to establish control lines.
