Irate hockey fan accused of attacking 2 people with golf club after Capitals lose

BARRIE, Ont. – Police say a Washington Capitals fan apparently upset about his team’s elimination from the NHL playoffs is facing charges after two people were assaulted with a golf club.

Barrie, Ont., police say officers responded early Thursday to a report of a man striking a woman with a tire iron and also hitting a passing car.

Police say the woman told officers the 43-year-old Barrie man had been drinking alcohol and watching his favourite team lose the playoff series to the New York Rangers.

Police say the pair began to argue and the man allegedly took a golf club and struck his girlfriend, who fled the home closely followed by the suspect.

When passersby stopped to assist the woman, the passerby and his vehicle were both struck with the club.

Officers located a man wearing a Washington Capitals jersey and charged him with two counts of assault with a weapon, and mischief under $5,000.
