United Way of Winnipeg celebrates 50 years with Portage and Main event

WINNIPEG – United Way of Winnipeg will celebrate its 50th anniversary Monday with a gathering at Portage Avenue and Main Street, where a number of events planned for June will be announced.

United Way officials, politicians, philanthropists, the heads of founding organizations the Winnipeg Labour Council and the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce and others will gather at 1 Lombard Place in front of the Richardson Building at 11 a.m. to kick off celebrations.

A United Way flag will also be raised at Winnipeg City Hall at 11 a.m.

United Way of Winnipeg was formed on May 11, 1965, to create a centralized fundraising organization that would benefit non-profit groups in Winnipeg “in a more adequate manner than the former method involving many independent appeals for funds,” the organization pledged in its incorporation act.
