CALGARY – Olympic speed skater Denny Morrison broke his thigh bone in a motorcycle crash in the city’s northwest on Thursday. Speed Skating Canada said Morrison has undergone surgery; a metal rod was placed in his leg to stabilize the bone. He was released from hospital Friday afternoon.

The organization said he could be walking with assistance within four to six weeks, but might also have internal bruising. He’s expected to be out at least three months.

The crash happened in the intersection of Charleswood Drive and Crowchild Trail N.W. at 6:45 p.m.

Police say a southbound motorcycle collided with a northbound Toyota Corolla that was making a left turn in the intersection.

The impact of the collision caused the Corolla to roll onto its side, causing minor injuries to its two occupants.

The driver, who was later identified as Morrison, was rushed to the Foothills Medical Centre with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. He suffered a fractured femur.

Police suspect speed was a factor in the crash.

“Witnesses tell us that the motorcycle was travelling at an extremely high rate of speed,” said Sgt. Joerg Gottschling.

No charges have been filed, but Calgary police are investigating.

“My initial suspicion would be a charge of dangerous driving or excessive speed,” added Gottschling.
