Day parole revoked for pedophile who killed 5-year-old Calgary girl

REGINA – The National Parole Board has revoked day parole for a pedophile who drowned a five-year-old Calgary girl and stuffed her body into a garbage can.

The board says Harold Smeltzer has shown an increasing risk of reoffending since he was first released on day parole in 2008.

It says it’s concerned the 56-year-old man was caught in November with a DVD containing sexual content and had started attending public events where children were present.

In 2010, the board turned down his request for overnight leave from his Regina halfway house.

Smeltzer served 27 years of a life sentence for the murder of Kimberley Thompson, who was snatched off the street in 1980 while on her way to kindergarten.

He was also convicted in several other sexual assaults and has admitted to attacking 40 young girls.
