Steve Ashton returns to Manitoba cabinet, rebel 5 still out

WINNIPEG – Greg Selinger brought Steve Ashton back into cabinet following his attempt to unseat the Manitoba premier in a leadership race, but Theresa Oswald remains without a portfolio.

Oswald was offered a position in cabinet but refused, Selinger said Wednesday.

Oswald lost the leadership by 33 votes on the second ballot March 8. She and four other former cabinet ministers who resigned amid a rebellion against Selinger’s leadership were all absent from the list as the premier announced changes to cabinet Wednesday ahead of the provincial budget being tabled Thursday.

Ashton was the first to be sworn in, as minister of infrastructure and transportation and minister responsible for emergency measures, the positions he held before he stepped down to run for the leadership.

The other changes are:

  • James Allum moved back to education after a brief stint as justice minister and attorney general.
  • Drew Caldwell takes responsibility for relations with the City of Winnipeg, previously part of Jobs and the Economy Minister Kevin Chief’s role. Caldwell is the MLA for Brandon East.
  • Kerri Irvin-Ross moves to deputy premier.
  • Gord Mackintosh becomes justice minister and attorney general.
  • Thomas Nevakshonoff is minister of conservation and water stewardship.
  • Mohinder Saran becomes minister of housing and community development.
