Don Narcisse All Star Football Camp scholarship winners

Watch above: Last week Global ran a contest for the opportunity to win a scholarship to this weekend’s Don Narcisse All Star Football Camp. After receiving and going through a number of entries, two deserving young people were chosen. Aaron Streck caught up with one of the winners … as his mom broke the news.

SASKATOON – “Nathan is a kind and deserving kid who donated his old cleats last year to another fellow player when times were tough for the player and his family,” said Jennifer Crump.

The words came naturally for Jennifer Crump as she nominated her son Nathan for a scholarship to this Saturday’s Don Narcisse All-Star Football Camp in Saskatoon.

“He’s the one you can count on to be there when you need help or just need a friend,” said Crump.

After holding the secret in for a day, Jennifer let the cat out of the bag, Wednesday.

Lost for words, Nathan Nixey can’t wait to suit up for the camp and meet one of his heroes, John Chick, but is also focused on improving his game.

“I need to learn back peddling cause I’ve fallen over a couple times, need to really concentrate on that,” said Global Scholarship Don Narcisse All-Star Football Camp Winner Nathan Nixey.

The 14-year-old has been playing football since Grade 5, a game he fell in love with immediately.

“My first year Warriors I had so many influential coaches and they made me want to keep playing and I just thought this is my thing,” said Nixey.

His mom couldn’t be happier.

“He’s got his whole life planned out all around football,” said Crump.

“So proud … you’re going to make me cry, I just live vicariously through him as he’s persuing his dreams of playing football.”

Growing up, Don Narcisse never had an opportunity like this, that’s why he started this camp.

“When I moved back to Canada, one thing I wanted to do was give back to the community and give back through the kids,” said the former Saskatchewan Roughrider and CFL Hall of Famer.

“It’s about kids getting off the sideline and getting into the game.”

That’s exactly what football and camps like this have done for young athletes like Nixey.

The Don Narcisse All-Star event kicks off Saturday at 9:15 am with registration. Proceeds from the evening gala go to support Big Brothers and Big Sisters.
