SASKATOON – Alvin Naistus, 24, made his first appearance in a Saskatoon provincial court room Wednesday morning. He is facing a second-degree murder charge in relation to Saskatoon’s fifth homicide of 2015.

Naistus is charged in the death of William Johnston, 44, who was stabbed Saturday morning in the Northwoods Inn & Suites parking lot near Idylwyld Drive North. He was taken to hospital and later pronounced dead.

An autopsy Monday confirmed the cause of Johnston’s death was from the stabbing.

Naistus was arrested without incident Tuesday at a home in the Pacific Heights neighbourhood by members of Saskatoon’s street gang police unit.

“I had a job lined up for him and he was doing his school,” said the family member, who asked not be identified for fear of possible retaliation.

The major crimes unit continues to investigate the homicide.

Naistus will appear again in provincial court on April 30.
