EDMONTON — With signs in hand St. Timothy Elementary students held a rally outside their school Tuesday morning calling on drivers to slow down in school zones.
The area surrounding the north Edmonton school is extremely busy and drivers are often speeding through the school zone when students are coming to and leaving school, according to Edmonton Catholic Schools.
“It’s been absolutely crazy. People are driving fast. Everyone is in a hurry, and pretty soon somebody is going to get hurt if we don’t look after this,” said Phebe Switzer, St. Timothy Elementary Principal.

Students said it’s not unusual to see vehicles going over the 30 km/h school zone speed limit.
“It’s just scary because you never know when someone is going to get hit or someone is going to get hurt, and they’re so young,” said Christopher, grade 6 student.
One of the issues is an intersection in front of the school doesn’t have a stop sign, said Switzer.
“We have contacted the City, and it’s quite a process to get the signage changed. That’s something we’re going to continue to focus on and hopefully you’ll see a stop sign here soon.”

The 30 km/h speed limit came into effect in Edmonton’s elementary school zones on Sept. 2, 2014.
A City of Edmonton report showed during the first six months following the implementation of the new speed limit 14 per cent of the vehicles monitored travelling through Edmonton school zones were speeding.
