EDMONTON – Three young girls, who are all battling cancer, had the chance to pirouette, sauté and chaîné with professional ballet dancers this weekend.

Kyla, 4, Mable, 6, and Faith, 8, took the stage with dancers from Edmonton’s Citie Ballet company Saturday afternoon, during their performance of Don’t Look Back.

“It’s been really nice to see them play and just enjoy themselves and feel quite confident going on stage,” said Sheri Somerville, executive director of Citie Ballet.

The big performance didn’t come without hours of rehearsal, though. The young dancers spent the past week rehearsing with the company.

“They were really excited. The first day they came into the studio they were a little shell shocked coming into a studio with all the great dancers and the pointe shoes,” said Somerville.

The nerves quickly wore off and it wasn’t long before Kyla, Mable and Faith were ready for their big premiere.

“They got to learn some classic ballet moves and they fell right into it. They were amazing. By the second rehearsal they had clearly rehearsed at home and they were ready for their performance.”

The opportunity was made possible by the Kids with Cancer Society. The dream experience was auctioned off during the society’s annual Beaded Journey Gala.
